| Records to launch his new single, “When I Rise.” Harrisburg, PA born Jay L is by no means new to the entertainment scene. As a teenager he sharpened his skills by earning props from local talent shows, and city showcases. Jay L’s big break came when he won 1st place at the world famous “Apollo”. Jay L’s talent was already in evidence by his first appearance at the world famous “Apollo” in 1994. That earned him a showcase with Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter Babyface. Jay L has also graced the stage with some of the best R&B and Rap artists in the industry, including Master P, David Banner, Public Announcement, City High and Case. Previous signage under J-Pat Management allowed him to showcase for other great artists, such as, Usher. A huge favorite with the ladies, Jay L knows how to captivate his crowd and hold them hostage. This was evident at his two extraordinary performances at the famous Apollo Theater in New York where he won over tough Amateur Night audience with his melodic, sensual vocals. As his song, “She’s Wanting More” suggests, his performances always leave his audience wanting more. Jay L’s gifts are evident in more than just his music. THE STORY BEHIND THE CLOTHING LINE: JAJA

MS. SHERYL ROBERTS

| Houston 411 Magazine had the pleasure of being invited to the Winter Fashion Show for one of Houston's upcoming Clothing Designers. I would like to introduce to you: Ms Sheryl Roberts. The event took place on February 9, 2008 at New Mount Calvary Church. I know you are probably wondering "A fashion show at a church!" Well you have to understand the story behind this incredible creation. I will let you read the story as Ms Roberts explains it in here own words. In the summer of 2001, I was dealing with a lot of pain caused by abuse that started when I was just 4 years old. For manny years, I was able to subconsciously block it all out but in my late twenties the memories began to surface. They refused to be pushed down or blocked out and were over taking my life. Not only was there pain, I felt alone and empty. I needed so much for the pain to stop and the emptiness to end. Satan had me believing that the only solution was to kill myself, so I sat down to write a suicide note to my family and friends. It was so hard for me to call on God at most times. I felt like he had abandoned me. I was angry at him. Where had he been? Why didn't he stop it? At other times, I just felt so unworthy to call on him, or to go before him. When a person has been violated they have massive amounts of shame, feelings of being dirty, and guilt. Why hadn't I said something? It didn't matter that I was the victim. I couldn't have stopped it anyway. My head at times told me something different. How could I go before God? I didn't even like myself; Why should he (God) love me? It was through the darkness of those days that I experienced the full meaning of (2Cor. 12:9). Remember when God said, " His strength is made perfect in our weakness." I was blessed by those words. When I could do nothing for myself, when I could not erase the shame, the pain or guilt, God spoke to me through his word. I heard him say "Come to me all you who are weary and heavy laden I will give you rest" (Matt.11:28). He also promised me that I would never be alone or abandoned. Just Ask Jesus Answers kept ringing in my ear. I found when I trusted God, it all proved to be true. Things didn't happen for me over night. I got the help I needed through trusted friends, therapy and prayer. The void in my life was replaced and filled with the ministry of others, pouring my life into theirs. JAJA was born out of that struggle and eventual victory. Why shirts & jeans? I like clothing!! However, on a deeper level, the message on the clothing is heard and a service provided to all ages. The "Winter Fashion Show" was such a wonderful event. It was spiritual and moving. There was: praise dancing, spoken words, songs of praise, a fashion show and a presentiation on abuse. Other churches even participated to add to this wonderful celebration. This was such an educational and inspirational experience. Houston 411 Magazine will be teaming up with Ms. Roberts to put on this presentation again. This is an event not to be missed and one for all ages. Ms. Roberts clothing line consist of clothing for the entire family. Infants, kids, womens and mens, from business to sports apparel, and dresses. I would like to thank Ms. Roberts for this remarkable experience and journey thru her life. Check out the photos below from the event. Written By: Janice Lavalais
